What to Expect in Your First 30 Days
What we are working on, what you can do to help, and why the early weeks can feel quiet.
Welcome to the team. The start of a case can feel uncertain, so this page walks you through the first month: what we are doing behind the scenes, what you can do to help, and what commonly comes next. Every case is different, so treat this as a general roadmap and ask your legal team how it applies to yours.
What we are doing right now
Your legal team is building the foundation of your case. That work has three main parts.
Learning your story. We review everything you have told us and every document you have shared. We will ask follow-up questions, sometimes about small details. Those details matter more than you might expect.
Evaluating your claims. We research the law that applies to your situation and test how the facts line up with it. We also begin looking at your potential damages, which is the legal word for the harm you suffered, such as lost wages and emotional distress.
Protecting the evidence. Where appropriate, we take steps to make sure important records are preserved and not lost while the case is young.
This early evaluation takes a bit of time, and the pace depends on the facts and records involved. Our goal is to reach an honest assessment of your case as promptly as we responsibly can.
What you should do
Here is your job in the first month. None of it is complicated, but all of it matters.
- Preserve everything you already have. Keep emails, texts, voicemails, photos, notes, pay records, and anything else related to your job or your claims. Do not delete, edit, or "clean up" anything, even things that seem unhelpful or embarrassing. Your team can explain why this matters so much.
- Do not go looking for new documents on your employer's systems. Only keep what you already lawfully have. Do not log in to work accounts you are no longer authorized to use, and ask us before forwarding anything from a work system. When in doubt, ask first.
- Write down what you remember. Dates, names, conversations, and events, in your own words. Memories fade, and your notes for us are protected. Label them "Prepared for my attorney."
- Send us documents through the client portal. It is secure and keeps everything in one place. See How to Reach Us and What to Expect.
- Stay quiet about the case publicly. Do not post about your case, your employer, or your claims on social media, and be careful what you say to coworkers. Talking about the case outside your legal team can hurt it.
- Tell us right away if the other side contacts you. If your employer, their HR team, or their lawyer reaches out about your claims, you do not have to respond. Let us handle it.
Why it may feel quiet
At some point in the first month, you may wonder why you have not heard from us in a while. That is normal, and it almost never means nothing is happening.
Most early case work happens away from you: reviewing documents, researching the law, and planning strategy. There are also stretches of built-in waiting in every legal matter, when we are waiting on records, on the other side, or on an agency or court. Quiet weeks are part of how cases work, not a sign that your case has stalled.
We will reach out whenever we need something from you or have news to share. And you never have to wait for us. If the silence is wearing on you, send a portal message and we will give you a status update.
What happens next
Once our evaluation is complete, we will talk with you about your options and our recommendation. Cases commonly move in one of three directions: sending a demand letter (a letter that lays out your claims and opens settlement talks), filing a charge with a government agency that reviews workplace claims, or filing a lawsuit. Which path fits your case depends on your facts, your goals, and the law that applies.
You can read about each stage in The Legal Process. Whatever the path, you will hear the reasoning from us before anything is filed or sent, and the big decisions will always be yours to make with our advice.
