What are 'Document Requests'?
A formal request for evidence in the discovery process.
Requests for Production of Documents, usually called document requests, are a standard part of discovery. One side formally asks the other to hand over copies of specific documents, files, and records.
Why it matters to you
Both sides use document requests. We use them to get the employer's records, like personnel files, internal emails, and policies. The employer will use them to request things from you, such as emails, text messages, and records related to your claims and your job search.
When requests arrive, we will tell you exactly what to look for among the documents and devices you already have. Do not delete anything related to your case, even things that feel embarrassing or unhelpful, and do not try to pull records from the employer's systems or accounts. Give us what you have, and we will handle the official response and any objections.
An example from an employment case
In an unpaid wage case, we might request the employer's time records, payroll data, and scheduling emails. The employer might request your own notes about your hours and any texts with coworkers about working through breaks. Those records become the evidence both sides rely on.
