What is a 'Motion'?

A formal request made to a court.

A "motion" is a formal written request asking a judge to make a legal ruling or take a specific action in a case. Either party in a lawsuit can file motions.

For example, if the opposing party is refusing to provide documents during discovery, we might file a "motion to compel," asking the judge to order them to produce the information. Motions are a standard part of navigating the litigation process.
