What is a 'Hearing'?

A formal proceeding before a judge.

A "hearing" is a formal proceeding before a judge to resolve a specific legal issue within a lawsuit. Unlike a deposition where no judge is present, a hearing results in the judge making a decision or order on a particular matter.

Hearings are often held to decide the outcome of a motion, such as a Motion for Summary Judgment, and are a standard part of the litigation process before a case reaches a full trial.
